An Innovative
Traditional Company
The origin of today’s GERHARDI Kunststofftechnik GmbH goes back to the year 1796. Founded by Hermann Richard Gerhardi in collaboration with his nephew Caspar Gerhardi and Friedrich Nottebohm, “Gerhardi & Cie.” was one of the pioneers in the production of brass and copper buckles. The product range was later expanded to the fabrication of tea and coffee sets.
In the years 1867 – 1871, the co-owner at the time, Ruderus Steinweg, bought the premises at the “Loher Wäldchen”. It was there that the production site Lüdenscheid was established in 1879, and it is where the headquarters of GERHARDI Kunststofftechnik GmbH are still located today.
Despite its constant innovative strength, the company has also suffered considerable setbacks in the meantime. In 1891, for example, large parts of the plant were destroyed by a major fire. There was another fire outbreak in 1906, and in 1940 half of the plant was destroyed by an explosion.
In 1952, the changing demands of the market brought about the need for operational expansions. The plant in Lüdenscheid was modernized and the focus was gradually shifted to manufacturing products for the automotive industry. Due to increasing production, the Ibbenbüren plant was founded in 1970. That same year, one of the first chrome-plated plastic parts rolled off the production line there. In 1999, the former owners decided to sell the company “Gerhardi & Cie.” to the company “Lydall Inc.”. By means of a MBO of our current company management in 2000, Gerhardi Kunststofftechnik GmbH was founded.
The business grew further when GERHARDI Kunststofftechnik GmbH announced the acquisition of the majority shareholding in the injection molding company Megatec in 2010. As part of its growth strategy, GERHARDI expanded its corporate activities and established a plant in Montgomery / Alabama (USA) in 2016. Production started in 2018. On the 4th of July 2018, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new “Rosmart plant” in Altena was held. The “Rosmart plant” started production in January 2020. In a production area of over 26,000 square meters, state-of-the-art technology is used on all levels. The Rosmart site is home to one of the world’s most modern and largest electroplating plants.
